Our Story

Tholé takes its name from the Tamil தோல் (thōl), the word for skin and leather. The name itself carries Pondicherry's layering: Tamil at the root, French in the inflection.

That same layering describes the person Tholé has in mind. Curious, sensitive to the essence of time, anchored yet free-flowing: someone tied to a sense of origin, yet moving easily between places, cultures, and ways of living.

This duality doesn't stay abstract. It lives in the objects themselves, rooted in the material knowledge and craft traditions of South India, yet made to travel well beyond where they were born. But travelling does not mean forgetting where they started.

The leather itself is vegetable-tanned, chosen because it behaves the way skin does: it takes a mark, darkens with handling, softens at the edges. A Tholé bag does not stay new. It carries the evidence of its own use, and grows more itself with time.

For Tholé, place is not a motif applied after the fact. Pondicherry enters the work through its material culture, its makers, and its particular histories of movement and exchange.

The objects hold these conditions quietly. They do not turn them into ornament.

That same restraint, holding rather than displaying, is why Tholé has no interest in the grand gesture. We look instead to the beauty of the small and the specific, the kind of detail that gets lost when objects are stripped of their origin stories and flattened into the sameness of global production.

Which is why Tholé aims to exist quietly, gracefully, and in honest association with the people who carry its objects forward.
